A hi-def screening of the 1961 movie classic with Bernstein's score played live on stage. 'Maria', 'America', 'Tonight', 'I Feel Pretty', 'Somewhere' and more.

Something's coming… And it's a timeless love story turned movie musical. The songs are winners. The dancing is cool. The story will break your heart.

West Side Story was a dream-team creation: music by Leonard Bernstein, book by Arthur Laurents, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, choreography by Jerome Robbins. Concept by William Shakespeare. In 1961 it was made into a movie, and went on to become the iconic winner of ten Oscars.

Now you can experience the re-mastered film, shown in hi-def with the original vocals and dialogue intact, and the full sound of Bernstein's score played live on stage by the SSO.

In the Hall of the Mountain King

Split Tour

MOZART Symphony No. 31 ‘Paris’
TCHAIKOVSKY Variations on a Rococo Theme
GRIEG Holberg Suite
GRIEG Peer Gynt Suite No. 1

BENJAMIN NORTHEY conductor
NAREK HAKHNAZARYAN cello

concert duration: 1h40 (including interval)

Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite boasts some of the most beloved music in the orchestral repertoire, where effervescent melodies take us on adventures through exotic lands and into the terrifying hall of the Mountain King himself. We begin, however, with an image of Mozart’s Paris. His Symphony No. 31 was composed in the French capital and is a testament to his precocious style and elegance. In Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, we are treated by charismatic conductor Ben Northey and 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition winner Narek Hakhnazaryan to a reverie of past traditions. Grieg’s Holberg Suite is a collection of dances that drift dreamily between baroque and modernist styles, completing a concert that celebrates the shifting boundaries between fantasy and reality.

Christmas is a wondrous time of year, whether signified by fresh snow or blossoming red pohutakawas.

This year we are proud to welcome New Zealand opera singer Teddy Tahu Rhodes as our soloist, performing Vaughan Williams’s evocative Fantasia on Christmas Carols.

We’ll also have our regular star turns by the sublime Graduate Choir, and favourite Christmas orchestral works, plus, of course, carols by John Rutter. Join us in the spacious acoustics of Holy Trinity Cathedral for a joyous concert that celebrates the Christmas season.
